About Us!

Situated near the centre of Sydney atop Observatory Hill, Fort Street was established as one of Australia's first public schools in 1849. In catering to the needs of students from many cultural backgrounds, the school provides a challenging academic program from Kindergarten to Year 6. A wide variety of extracurricular activities are offered through the school, with students given opportunities to excel in the arts, sports and public speaking.

Fort Street has committed and caring teachers who work diligently together to support the academic success and emotional wellbeing of every student. The staff is proud to offer a rich and diverse range of learning experiences. The innovative use of technology is embraced by the school through the use of interactive whiteboards in every classroom and a well-resourced computer lab. Specialist staff work with teachers throughout computer lessons, and to support students who speak English as a second language or have special learning needs. Library and Italian lessons are also provided weekly.

A spirit of cooperation is promoted by the staff and fostered among students through a range of welfare programs and the integrated teaching of values across the whole school curriculum. Students have the opportunity to vie for a range of leadership opportunities, including participation in the Student Representative Council, which maintains the school garden and organises events to raise funds for charities throughout each year.

Given Fort Street's beautiful location in the city, the school receives a great degree of private sector support, which helps the school deliver an outstanding reading program to every student. Fort Street students have access to KGV Recreation Centre, a state of the art indoor sports facility on Cumberland Street.

Parents opt to send their children to Fort Street Public School due to its high standards and friendly reputation. Many parents enjoy the peace of mind that comes with sending their children to a school close to their place of employment in the CBD. The school s location also provides greater convenience for working parents to regularly attend events, meetings and assemblies. Before and after school care (OOSH) is provided on school grounds by the Parents and Citizens Association, which supports Fort Street Public School in all its endeavours. Many Fortians also attend child care at KGV every afternoon.
